In claiming victory in Iowa, Buttigieg tells his audience of his success, “It validates for a kid somewhere in a community, wondering if he belongs or she belongs or they belong in their own family that if you believe in yourself and your country, there’s a lot backing up that belief.” In addition to referencing the history-making moment of having LGBTQ representation among presidential contenders, Buttigieg refers to his husband Chasten as “the first gentleman of the United States,” again presenting a different image of who is presidential and what a first family can look like. Sharing a photo of the two men embracing on election night the next day, Chasten Buttigieg tweets, “It gets better.”
