September 19, 2020 - Trump asks Women if their Husbands “Are OK” with their Rally Attendance

At a North Carolina campaign rally, Trump singles out a group of women supporters and asks how many rallies they have attended. When they share the number, Trump responds by saying, “I hope your husbands are OK with it. Are they OK? They’re OK. You have good husbands.” Trump appears to make the comment in jest, but it plays into perceptions that he both understands and approaches gender dynamics with a presumption of male dominance and female dependence, assuming women need permission and/or protection from their husbands (or Trump himself). Democrats, including the DNC, leverage the comment to continue to characterize Trump as a threat gender equality.
