September 29, 2020 - Trump Interruptions Dominate Debate

Throughout the first presidential debate, Trump interrupts both Biden and moderator Chris Wallace, leading Wallace to confront Trump directly: “I think that the country would be better served, if we allowed both people to speak with fewer interruptions. I’m appealing to you, sir, to do that.” Eventually, Biden expresses his frustration with the interruptions by saying, “Will you shut up, man?” The contrast between Biden’s reaction and Hillary Clinton’s previous statements about being reluctant to express her own frustration at Trump during a 2016 presidential debate provides an example of how gender expectations can differently shape candidate behavior as well as reactions to it. Columnist Jill Filipovic wrote about this after the first 2020 debate, arguing, “Biden, by virtue of being a white man, has more leeway in his interactions with his adversary and flexibility in what tactics he deploys.”
