September 29, 2020 - Trump Stumbles When Asked if he Would Directly Condemn White Supremacist Groups

In the first presidential debate, moderator Chris Wallace asks Trump to directly condemn white supremacist groups like the Proud Boys. Trump waffles, but upon further prodding says, “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by.” He quickly adds, “But I’ll tell you what…somebody’s got to do something about antifa and the left because this is not a right-wing problem.” Despite Trump’s walking back of these comments the next day, many – including the Proud Boys and other white supremacist groups – viewed Trump’s response as a tacit endorsement of white supremacist groups and acceptance of their support of the Trump campaign. Like many white supremacist groups, the Proud Boys – which is an exclusively male group – espouse misogyny in their declarations of white male dominance.
