July 14, 2019 - Trump tells Democratic Congresswomen to “Go Back” to their Countries

In a tweet, Trump responds to criticism from Democratic congresswomen Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) – each of whom are women of color elected first in 2018 – to “go back and fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”All four women are American citizens; three of the four were born in the U.S., and Omar left Somalia when she was 6, settling in the U.S. at the age of 10. While many opponents criticized Trump’s tweet as racist and evidence of Trump’s particular targeting of women of color, a USA Today/Ipsos poll found that only 37% of Republicans found the tweet offensive. Moreover, 57% of  Republicans said they agreed with Trump’s tweets and just 45% of Republicans found telling minorities to “go back where they came from” to be a racist statement, in stark contrast to the 85% of Democrats who believe that is a racist statement.
