After an open letter to Warren was published on February 26, 2020 that criticized her previous adoption of a tribal identity and her attempt to show these roots with a DNA test in fall 2018, Warren issues a 12-page response letter to “concerned citizens of the Cherokee nation” and other tribal nations that details her apology, her understanding of the concerns laid out in the original letter, and her policy agenda items and positions that she argues will benefit tribal nations. In the second paragraph, she writes, “I am not a person of color; I am a white woman, and that is how I identify. I am not a tribal citizen.” This letter, which was shared by press, appears to be another attempt to move beyond this issue that has continued to challenge Warren and her campaign.
